What an Experience!

 
This very fast, and exhausting experience was well worth it with Professor Wesley in her GE 102 English class. I learned a lot of things that I actually should have learned already from my past English classes. Including all of the new things that she taught us; It all makes me feel so much smarter since I graduated high school already. Even though we have been in this class for five weeks now, it really does not feel that long. 

Never in my life have I ever had to work so hard to get what I want. That's a fact, here in college, things are real! Nothing is given to anybody, and it has been my wake up call that life isn't going to be a walk in the park. I feel that I wasn't really prepared to succeed here, as I did in high school. I struggled to pass the things I did pass, and in my mind I felt that my grade would be at least around a B. Turns out I had a C mid term average. This just means that I need to work harder, no excuses. Success is my goal, nothing will hinder me from reaching it.

Being in this program has brought more benefits to myself than I planned on getting. Seeing how the college life, and how classes are actually going to be before anyone else is a preparation for myself. Now I really know what is required of me to do my absolute best when I return in the fall. I said all that to say this, Professor Wesley is an awesome professor! She is a highly recommended English professor from me, I would advise anyone to take her classes. I will be taking her again in the fall for GE 103. Definitely looking forward to succeeding more than I did in the summer.

Racism Research

My Research From the Library 

Today in the library I experienced difficulty trying to obtain the books I could use as sources in my paper. Although I did figure out how to find the certain books I was looking for on my own. I went online and typed in racism as the criteria, then several books were at my disposal to choose from. Once I got help from the librarian on how to locate the book I chose on the shelves, I immediately went to help others who had a hard time finding what they needed.

The books I choose to pull information from were great choices. I already have a lot of facts, and also statistics that I can refer to in my paper. I haven't looked for many websites as sources yet, I am more concerned on making sure I get a good deal of information from the books since it is more difficult to find certain information from reading; rather than it is to find on the web.

I feel like I would still need a little help keeping up with the outline that I will create today. I think I may end up not following my outline as I begin to type my paper, which will probably cause me to not flow; and it may cause my paper to be unorganized. I know that I will do my best, and if there are any questions I may have, I know my peers are here with me the whole way.

My Arguable Claim

So today in class, we discussed the four sources of arguable claims. Only one of the four will we choose to base our paper on. Those four sources are: Issues of Definition, Issues of Causation, Issues of Evaluation, and Issues of Recommendation

The source that matches my theme(racism) would be issues of definition. This means that my argument will hinge on how to define an object, events, or people.

In my argument, I must provide legit evidence that will make the reader look at my argument in my point of view. So for example, I would include a direct quote from a legit website like counterpnch.org 

Another aspect of this paper that will make it flow, and also support your evidence, is the emotion you include. For instance, I would incorporate logos by informing the reader on my beliefs. I believe that your race shouldn't be criticized from the way you dress. I could bring authority in, and my ethos would be not to stereotype people just because of their color. The hook that will have the reader wondering, is the pathos. I could easily say all native Americans are leaving Hollister, NC for example.

Has anybody ever asked you what your race is? Because they couldn't tell what you could be...

Today in class, we discussed the different argumentative topics, and what an argumentative essay is all about. I'm talking HOT topics, like believing in god, people with no father amounting to nothing, people with poor motherhood growing up to be a disgrace, and such.

It reminds me of debating!

When you debate, you try to prove someone otherwise of their beliefs.  The point is not to win your case, but to prove your point with evidence. Since we have to choose a theme from the novel "Sula", that will also serve as a resource to write our essay;  I  would go with racism.

 

 Being that I am Native American, and being tanned, with a a hip hop looking style; this makes people clueless about my race. They look at my hair, they look at my clothes, they look at my skin. Since I have Native American hair, and I am light skinned, people consider me white.

When writing my essay, I know that I will make everyone believe that this is what people really do. This is how they really look at my kind of people. I could definitely research way back in the day, and speak of the types of racism in our world back then, and the kind that still lives today.

BECAUSE YOU ARE A CHILD

And this is NO excuse...

 

Even when i was a child, I always got upset at my parents for not letting me buy the games some of my friends had. Like "Grand Theft Auto, and True Crime". As a kid, I felt like that was mean, but now that I see what media violence does to kids just like I was, it influences them that they can do what imaginary things do.From the reading we done this morning, I now know that many of the American children today, shows little, to no interest at all in reading, and educational activities. Surveys show that they choose to stay inside their room and play video games, or watch inappropriate cartoons all day; rather than going outside to get the physical activity their body needs.

The media alone is having a negative affect on children. If parents allow their children to do as they please, like staying on the video game all day, they get no exercise, and have bad health. Which leads up to obesity(another problem in America). 

On the other hand, with a parent who balances their child's activities out, and monitors what their child is engaged in, this will most likely be the child that won't become someone their not meant to be. Like possibly the next mass murderer of one of our fifty states in the U.S.

 

The video we watched in class touched me from the introduction. Which showed near infants, up to no good; causing pain upon their selves. All because they don't know any better, and they seen cartoons do things that hurts their self. So it makes them think that they can hurt their selves, and be okay just like the characters. In this video, you get the idea that if a child of any age, has access to the violent media entertainment, it is normal for a kid  to attempt to do exactly what someone on video games, or movies, or even cartoons are doing. 

Nothing could be worse than dealing with your child growing up as a criminal. Or having your child seriously injure their selves, or someone else. Knowing that it was your fault you let them see things they shouldn't as an immature audience. 

I believe its all about good parenting!

The more the parents of America stand up for preventing media violence, the less criminal children we would have; and maybe more successful children will be the leaders of America for our future.

1965 - She Cries Out for Her

Sula oh Sula. . . 

Since her death...twenty five years has now passed. Things are really changing in the Bottom. Women all still close to their husbands, just as if Sula was still there. This is a good thing though, women should value their marriage not because they fear someone will interfere, but because its what you are supposed to do in a marriage. So things are really coming together in the Bottom...

 

Nel is still though, one of the curious ones. 

She really wants to know more about Eva. I think that she is just so used to hearing rumors in the Bottom about her, so she wants to see for herself what type of person she is.


This turned out to be everything Nel thought it wouldn't. Nel went to the nursing home where Eva was. She was welcomed by Eva with no problem, and out of no where it was like Eva just started to accuse Nel of being the one who killed Chicken Little. I was thinking, "Yeah, Eva is really messed up in the mind." She was saying things that didn't make sense, while she was being an asshole towards Nel; like she kept on saying things about orange juice, while the topic was who killed Chicken Little. Nel tried her best to plead her case, that it was Sula who killed him. Eva didn't listen, she thought they were the same anyway. 

Yes, Nel and Sula...Eva said "whats the difference?"

Nel is really feeling some type of way about this, so she leaves before this argument may have escalated into something much worse. 

As she makes it onto the streets, all she can do is look at flashbacks in her mind. Surprisingly, Nel didn't have a nervous breakdown or anything like that. She sees a lot of her past. She even meets Shadrack as she walked back toward the Bottom. Shadrack knew he had seen her before too. He didn't say a thing though, so they both walked further and further away from each other. I kind of thought Shadrack was going to say something to her for sure.They both just walking, and thinking of the past.

 

 

 The very segregated town of the Bottom, was becoming less racist. Everybody started coming together, and making things better in the community, and also in their lives. I really thought that Shadrack would have been another victim for death, as well as Nel. Although, these two characters remained. I just hope that no one ever comes back in their society that is another "Sula".

1941 - Is This a New Begining?

The people of the Bottom are filled with joy!

The news of the death of Sula was everything the Bottom wanted to hear. Having her away for good, and not bringing fear upon people, or even having to worry about bad luck being brought upon one.






Although this was the best of news, they still haven't forgot about the promising jobs for them; to work at the tunnel.

 This tunnel had all the rumor of blacks to work in it. That rumor was just forgotten for about three years, but it came back just as strong a promise for the people in need. This was a major job opportunity that no one was going to turn down, and they all really have their hopes high to get it. 

Unexpectedly


Winter surprises them.

With late harvesting canceled. A lot of things were different since the frost came in. Everybody stayed inside now, the only time people came out were to go next door to maybe trade foods.
Now the people of the Bottom aren't even getting their hopes up too high to become a tunnel worker. I feel like now that Sula is gone, the people of the Bottom still have yet to get rid of the bad situations. Like now, they thought since Sula left, they wouldn't have to worry about being afraid anymore. They thought good was about to come to them, like the rumor about the job working in the tunnel. The frost messed that hope all up!

Now I really feel sorry for those guys...because they found out that the jobs promised to them have been denied.

Here comes New Years!

 

So the new year is finally here. Which is also the night before National Suicide Day! Shadrack is now feeling sad, I think he is more depressed because he knows how lonely his life is. The crazy thing to me is, Shadrack only had one visitor to ever come to his home. This special one time visitor is Sula. Shadrack seems to want to hold memories of her visit. Maybe this makes him feel better to know at least somebody came to see him.


Shockingly, the next day...on Shadrack's day(National Suicide Day), he doesn't even want to come out. I think he feels bad for Sula's death, he told Sula "always" and now he sees that there is no always.

1940 - RIP

Can you believe that Nel and Sula still came back together to talk after Sula screwed Nel over?

Well....it was three years later and Nel found out that Sula is severely ill.  Nel actually contacted Sula to check on her, or maybe she just wanted to ask Sula why she done what she done. I kind of don't blame Nel for being curious. I would want to know why my "used to be best friend" did that to me too. I don't think I would have ever tried to contact them though. The only way I would have asked them was if they some how came in my presence. Nel had to travel to see Sula.

ANYWAYYYSSSS. . .

I would really like to know what kind of sickness Sula was suffering from. I know we read that she had symptoms like fevers, but it must have been way worse than that. Sula was really getting some age on her, and that sickness took her life. PAINLESSLY

I found it really shocking how Nel went to see her at Eva's house at first(Sula's grandmother), before she had to get sent to the hospital. Because I thought Sula would have tried to kill Nel or inflict some type of pain to her when she came. Surprisingly, the suspense in Sula's fate, and the argument between the two had my full attention. Sula couldn't even tell herself why she fucked Nel's man. So Nel got everything off her chest about it and I don't fault her for that. Although, Nel is stoopid for offering to go to the drug store to pick up Sula's prescribed medicene for her. After what she has done to me, theres' no way I would do something like that for her.

 

Nel probably knew Sula wasn't going to make it without her medicene. She wanted to know why Sula did her like that, so I guess she had to get her what she needed to keep her be able to talk and think, so Nel could find out. But Nel didn't get anything but a bitch out of Sula. 

Sula's dumb ass takes her medicine once Nel gets it for her. But she kept on overdosing herself like it was going to make something better! To overdose yourself will only make you worse, and this shows Sula's true dumb side. Her true murderous act. So Sula died of overdosing on her pain killers. I'm sure most people wanted her dead. To me she deserved to be dead. She's only putting all harm to the society and just like a suffering animal, you'd rather just put them down, than continue to let them suffer. 

I think karma has finally struck Sula. The lives she has taken, and the pain she has inflicted, has now hit her back.

So this time Sula thinks she actually feels some kind of connection between her Ajax. As soon as I think about Sula having an affair with Jude Greene, I think "Why the hell would she do someone she called her best friend like that, if she wouldn't want to share somebody that means everything to her?" 

 

 

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm........

From our class discussion today I feel like she very well deserves every bit of pain she felt when Ajax left here.We talked about how everyone in town knows her to be a bitch, and a roach. Can you blame them? She brought pure evil to the bottom. When she came around its not just a coincidence that Mr. Finley choked on his chicken bone and died. Or that Teapot went tumbling down the stairs of her porch, after he asked for some bottles. Sula is the reason behind all this. Innocent people are dying because of her dumb ass. YES! She does have feelings, obliviously since she has fallen for Ajax. That's not the point, this girl is nothing but bad and she knows it. 

Guess what the real scope on her significant other is...

Mr. Ajax as always is treating Sula like a doll. He is showing her affection, and even bringing her bottles that she collects. Just for her sake, but he isn't really doing it for her. This is a plot for her good good! All Ajax wants from her is the cookies. Nobody could tell from the beginning if he would leave after Sula opened up to him. Sure enough, Ajax dissapeared after he was pleasured. Now leaving Sula feeling like wrong was done to her. Yes, wrong was done to her. But in my eyes, its what she asked for.

Look at what Ajax does leave behind other than his scent and semen all over the place... 

Sula finds his wallet! Now she finds out that Ajax was not Ajax. This man is really Albert Jacks. Instantly, Sula knows she has been played out, and she is sad about it. The only thing truthfully that she probably has from him is the proof of the animal in his pants, and him being truly fine as wine. At this point she doesn't know what to do, and we would never guess at what she will do next! I wonder who is next on her death list...

1937 - What is this world coming to?!

Sula is back . . . Evil is right by her side.  

 

With the robins by her side, we all knew that Sula was bringing her terror right back to Medallion. Nel was just as excited to finally see Sula for the first time in ten years. She soon realizes that she should have been disgusted to see her. 

In our discussions from class today I even understood a part of this chapter I didn't understand. This was about the gray ball Nel with her. We talked about it being a spider web of her life. Or maybe her feelings, this spider web seemed to be holding her back from gaining knowledge to better herself, and get over things that happened in her life. Eventually, we realized that when Nel finally balded the web up small as it could get, she finally just let the things she has been through go.

 Nel has just seen what she never saw coming...

Nel has walked in on her husband and her so called "best friend" having sex! This is the moment of truth, literally. I couldn't even bare to understand the pain she felt as she witnessed this unbelievable sight.

Sula really is a bitch! I don't understand what makes Nel continue to hang around her. After all she has heard people say about her. Sula is pure evil. The robins that came along with her when she came back to Medallion was even the sign that evil has come. Or worse...death!

 

This is time for Nel to put her foot down.

Nel is still so blind to what is happening right in front of her eyes! She actually thinks that Sula was maybe against this affair, but Jude was the one for it. She walked in on them as Jude was in mid stroke with Sula on all fours. She saw Sula and Jude both butt ass naked. Still doesn't wake up to see that Sula doesn't give a damn about anybody! This girl is possessed in my eyes. I would be ready to kill both of them! 

But most importantly...Sula....

Revenge awaits Sula, as long as Nel fights for her respect. 

 

Which she probably will not.

1927 - Love is in the air...Or is it?

Here comes the bride! 

Nel and Jude Greene are becoming newly weds! Time has flew by and Sula and Nel's friendship has fallen off now. Nel is only my age though, and shes getting married already! But back in the day, getting married young was as average as getting married around your mid, to late twenties is today.

It was surprising to me that Jude's dad had put a whole pint of liquor in the punch that the reception had. Everybody that drank some ended up tipsy. It seems like the reception was pretty cool. But I don't understand why Nel is so weak when it comes to men. She is very dependent upon men, and luckily for her; Jude Greene wants a woman to depend on him. So Nel is the perfect one. Still though, they aren't getting married out of love. I think its all for Jude Green's sake...Nel doesn't care because she gives in so easily to any man. Maybe this marriage between the two will become love, I would hope so since they should be together forever. 

Here comes the racism in 1927...

 

There's this man that goes by the name of Jude Greene. He was the tenor of Mount Zion's Quartet. He never really planned on getting married but he met Nel, marriage happened quicker than he could decide if he was ready. I feel like he may have not been ready for that, but Nel was, so I guess he just may have been one of the lucky ones to find their soul mate and their love would last forever. 

I said all that to say this, this man makes a living from being a waiter at Hotel Medallion. He has this great opportunity to feel more of a man, by becoming a construction worker. The men who do the hiring wasn't even looking his way as he applied for the job. Of course, the hiring guys were white. Jude Greene was a black man, and fairly young. 

This man just wants to earn more, and also do the work of a real man. The racist acts of foolish people wont allow his goal to be achieved...

 

1923 - The Tragic END

Mama loves you . . .

Normally you'd think family would die for you right? Out of love . . .

Well Hannah is just the beginning of what we may call trifling, a back stabber. Or just plain wrong. Hannah is the mother of Sula, who she doesn't even like. How can you not like your own daughter? This is insane, you would have to be really cold hearted to not like your own daughter. I'm not saying that you can't dislike your family's ways; while at the same time loving them, but I don't believe this was the case with Hannah. 

Hannah said she did love Sula, she just doesn't like her. My point is...Sula watched her mother burn to blisters and did nothing in the world about it! Hannah didn't deserve to die! I know that shock could overcome a person, but it is really funny how Sula "accidentally" killed Chicken Little as well. I just don't believe this girl is allowing things like this to go wrong in her life for nothing. We already know shes crazy as hell! She tried to cut her own finger tip off, come on now! 

WHO DOES THAT !?!?!?!?!

 From the class discussion this morning, we all could infer that Eva actually made her tragic cause become sensible. I say this because, at first we thought by killing her baby boy Plum, she was an evil lady. Turns out, Eva killed him out of love.

When you think about it, she said that she only wanted him to die as a man. Not as a baby boy, that can't take care of his self; who is still trying to crawl back into his mother's womb. She said that she no longer had anymore room for him. Even if it was possible for him to get back into her womb, she wasn't going to allow it. Maybe the doing of drugs Plum did, and the irresponsible state of mind, made Eva make the decision to keep him from struggling in his life.  

 

BACK TO THIS CRAZY PERSON NAMED

 It is no longer a coincidence, Sula is up to something. She is very mischievous and sneaky. The crazy, thing is...Eva seen this coming. Eva even thinks Sula watched Hannah die in interest. This will definitely catch up with her...just wait.

 

1922 - Fun Gone Wrong

 Use your "Imaginaaaaaaaaaaattttiooonnnn ! ! "

 

This is definitely the most imaginative chapter yet. Since the first paragraph, I could literally picture every single event being played in my mind as if I was dreaming. I could even imagine the perverted men that hang out around the stores on Carpenter's road. These guys actually remind me of guys I'm around every day. Looking at females, and calling them things like "pig meat". That's just rude!

Although I hate the fact that there were these four white teenagers who found it funny to bully the black children everyday in the afternoon. Those boys inflicted pain upon the black children just as worse as some grown people get jumped by a gang, or beat up from some kind of unmatched(two on one)fist fight. Nel and Sula both eventually had become a victim of these boys torment. They tried to avoid them for a while; but one day, Sula became fed up with hiding. It's like Sula's mind went insane and she was no longer in her right mind. I say that because on that day her and Sula decided to not hide from the boys one day after school. They eventually walk into the guys, showing dominance as if they owned Carpenter's road and tried to block their path. So Sula whipped out her knife! This young girl has some serious balls! Instead of even threatening them in the beginning with the knife, she cuts her own finger tip off and then threatens the boys! Showing them how crazy she was by almost cutting her finger off, she wanted them to imagine what she would do to them. I believe Sula had this all planned out before she even told Nel that she wanted to go the short way home. I can't even imagine what she would do to those boys! I'm sure they deserve it, but this girl has some serious issues!

1920 Introducing Helene

So from the beginning of 1920, I honestly can't really understand what the author is talking about. Although I can say that Helene dealt with marriage without her man being around all the time. Helene seemed real independent to me though, she dealt with a nine year marriage before she had a child. She looked at her daughter, Nel for more comfort and happiness in her life. Nel also gets introduced to her grandmother who is evidently someone she never expected her to be. It actually shocked me that her grandmother made a living by being a prostitute. She also looked entirely too young to be a grandmother to Nel, which if I could see how she actually looks I would probably think the same thing. Just to imagine someone having a grandmother that is a true prostitute is so sad. I couldn't imagine having to always remember someone so loved and dear to me, is a whore. Since Nel is young right now, I believe she will be so curious about the things her grandmother does, lets just hope that Nel doesn't fall into her footsteps.

1921 The Hot Topic: Eva

Eva...was a very independent, but dumb woman to me. She was totally abandoned by her husband and was left to raise her children all by herself. She really did struggle trying to provide food for her kids. She was pretty damned lucky if you ask me. I say this because from her neighboors generosity, they aided Eva in providing her with food she needed to keep her family from starving. You could really tell how far out the way this woman would go for her  kids if she'd choose to stick her fingers up her baby boy's butt hole to clean a path for his bowel movements to flow properly. But its so crazy because this lady leaves all her children with Mrs. Suggs(her neighbor)! Eva promised she would be back to pick them up in a matter of hours, those hours she promised turned into months! Eighteen long months with no sign of life or anything! If she loves her family so much why in God's name would she do something like that? Then when she does come back, she is somehow magically wealthier, and missing one of her legs. This is a moment where I'm sure we all are cursing about how crazy this Eva lady is!

1919 Cow Bells Ringing

In the first chapter of Sula, I learned that Shadrack was an African American solider. Who actually took part in World War II. Shadrack was obviously traumatized from some grusome events that he witnessed during the war. Yet, the most puzzling thing to me about the story is  that nobody knows if Shadrack has hands at all! I feel like why the hell does this man hide his own hands behind his back for so long, knowing that there is something wrong with them! It would make sense to me to see whats going on with yourself, so that you could possibly resolve the issue! I couldn't imagine going through anything like he has though, this man is a solider and he is lucky to be alive after the war he has fought in. But National Suicide Day? See that is exactly how you know the military will brain wash you! They make people go crazy and obviously, we see that Shardrack is clear evidence. I think that this national holiday is indeed, unique in its own way. At the same time, why would our government even allow this to be legalized? Maybe things back in the day were less thought of. The world may never know!
